What is GATE Exam .?
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India, Every year in the month of January/February. In GATE examination, candidates can apply for only one of the 23 papers listed in the table given below. Candidates are expected to appear in a paper suitable to the discipline of their succeeding (qualifying) degree. However, candidates are free to choose any paper according to their admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which they wish to seek admission. For more details regarding the admission criteria in any particular institute, candidates are advised to refer to the websites of that particular institute. In the current competitive situation, where there is growing of universities and engineering colleges, the only benchmark to measure and test the calibre of engineering students is the GATE exam. There is a misconception among students that GATE exam is meant for ME./M.Tech which lastly leads to a teaching profession only. The GATE score/Rank is used for admissions to Post graduate Programmes (ME, M.Tech, MS, direct PhD) in IISc, IITs and other prestigious Institutes / Universities in India, with financial assistance provided by MHRD. The GATE Score may also be used by PSUs for recruitment of candidates for prestigious jobs (entry-level positions) with very High salary packages. Some of the PSUs which use GATE score for providing jobs include Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Power Grid, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) etc. Based on the success story of IISc & IITs all over the world, GATE is also recognised by various international institutes such as Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS) and Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany.
All the papers of GATE will be conducted by an ONLINE computer Based Test (CBT). The GATE paper consists of questions of both multiple choice type and numerical answer type. For numerical answer type questions, the candidates have to enter a number as the answer using a virtual key board. The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hour duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
The GATE score reflects the relative performance level in a particular Engineering branch. GATE score is valid for three years.
Eligibility for GATE Exam is Completed or final year students of BE /B.Tech or its equivalent. M. Sc/MA/MCA can also apply.
The curriculum ( syllabus )for the exam in Engineering streams include General aptitude (Numerical Ability & Verbal Ability) for 15 marks, Engineering Mathematics for 10 to 13 marks and the rest of 72 to 75 marks in technical subjects studied at undergraduate level.
